The foolproof shortcut for shorter, better comms

A quick shortcut and some harsh truths today - buckle up.

Now you’ve probably heard the advice ‘Put yourself in your reader’s shoes’ a gazillion times.

And it’s good advice. Getting inside your reader’s head is important if you want to engage and influence them.

But all too often you just don’t have time to ponder your reader’s preferences over a leisurely cuppa.

You’ve got to get that update out by 4pm, sharp. And you haven’t had time to eat lunch, go to the bathroom or stalk your frenemy on Instagram.

So here’s my foolproof shortcut.

As you’re reading through each section of your update/email/presentation, just ask yourself this simple question:

Is this for me or is it for them?

i.e. Did I write this bit for my benefit or for my reader’s benefit?

This little question will reveal where you’ve included information just to look clever or to cover your backside. (I told you there’d be harsh truths...)

It’ll highlight if you’re writing to understand a problem yourself rather than packaging it digestibly for your reader.

And it’ll show where you could be clearer or more concise.  Clever, right?

So tell me: could you use this shortcut?  Have a try and let me know how you get on (I love hearing from you).
